About our measurement queries

If you found this page from a reverse DNS lookup, you’re looking at a research host we run. We’re measuring which IP addresses the world’s registered domains resolve to, using the zone files ICANN publishes through its Centralized Zone Data Service. The queries are as light as we know how to make them: a single ordinary A-record lookup per domain, sent straight to the nameserver already authoritative for that domain, rate limited per nameserver and paced across many hours so that nobody sees a burst. There’s no spoofing, no amplification and nothing recursive — it’s the same question any resolver would ask, just spread very thin.

If it’s causing you any trouble at all, write to abuse@dnscensus.org — a person reads it and will act on it.
